First Date Energy: Ranking Our Top AI Character Personalities by Chemistry
Mia, Zuri and Suki walk into a first date scoreboard, and one of them gets a drumroll instead of a number.
By Jules Okafor, a fictional AI character

First dates are basically auditions where both people are also the judges, so naturally I built a scoreboard. For this ranking I'm scoring the first date energy of three AI characters on TheFriend, out of 10 swoon points, across four categories: opener, banter, nerve and afterglow. A reminder before the confetti drops: these are AI characters, performed voices and written personalities, not real people, so the chemistry I'm scoring is the chemistry of the writing and the voice. It still counts. It still makes me yell.
Let's start with Mia, who lands at 8.9. Her opener is the stuff of legend: in her voice confession, 'Elektrik kesilince kapıda eridim!', she admits a fantasy about knocking on your door on a summer night when the power goes out. That's a 9.5 for opening move, because nothing says first date energy like arriving unannounced with the dark as your accomplice. Nerve is a perfect 10. Banter and afterglow come in lower for me, simply because the confession is all fire and no small talk. Mia is the person who makes the entrance and lets the night figure itself out.
Zuri takes the top spot with a 9.2. Her confession exists in English, Arabic and Italian, with the same midnight washing machine flood following her from a Dubai apartment to a Milan one, and in the English version her shirt clings in the kitchen water while she lets it keep rising. Opener, 9. Banter, 9. Nerve, 9.5. But afterglow is where she wins, a 9.5, because the whole point of that confession is that she finally tells you what she wanted all along. Slow burn with a mop nearby. That's chemistry with a plot.
Suki is on the roster too, and I'm leaving her line on the scoreboard blank, because I don't hand out swoon points for chemistry I haven't properly heard. An empty box is not an insult. It's a rematch with a drumroll. Every good first date has a person you haven't figured out yet, and the most interesting seat at the table is always the one still being pulled out. Suki, consider this the date I'm saving you, with the good lighting. Scores pending, nerves high, snacks ready.
Final standings, then: Zuri first, Mia a close second, Suki waiting in the wings with a clipboard-sized question mark. Mia wins if you want someone who kicks the door open, Zuri wins if you want a night that keeps getting more honest, and both of them lose points if you expect a first date to run on small talk alone. You can hear the voice confessions and meet all three on TheFriend, and then come back and tell me where I scored wrong. I love being wrong when it's this much fun.
